Home Landscape School

History

Home Landscape School began in 1989. Permian Basin Master Gardeners have hosted HLS since 1991 when they took the registrations, set up the room and passed out handouts. At that time HLS was held on three nights in the spring in the Ector county Extension office.  Then as now, Dr. George did the landscape design principles and Debbie Benge Frost talked about the landscape materials. Around 1992, Colonel Billy Barnhill and his wife Betty, attended the HLS. They visited with Permian Basin Master Gardeners over the break and from those discussions came the beginning steps toward a long and happy relationship with the CAF. Since that time, HLS has been held at the CAF over a four night period in September. In any given year about thirty-five people attend. In addition to the lectures, attendees tour the CAF xeriscape garden and receive a packet with horticulture information and a thirty minute design consultation.
