CAF Memorial Garden History

The design for the Memorial Garden began in 1993 when a Colonel with the Commemorative Air Force came to the then fledgling Master Gardener organization and asked for help in creating and maintaining a garden area.  Planting began in the spring of 1994 and new plants have been added each year.  The garden exhibits over 80 species of plants and trees that are well adapted to our environment.  Master Gardeners designed, installed, maintain and utilize this garden for educational and plant testing practices.   Information is provided to the public on environmentally friendly gardening and EarthKind principles.  Tours are hosted by Master Gardeners throughout the growing season.  A PowerPoint program on the history of the garden is also available.

The Commemorative Air Force has set memorials in the garden honoring people and events of World War II.  The garden combines a sense of peace with the splendor of nature.  The vibrant colors and diversity of plants attract many species of birds and butterflies.  The garden is open to the public with the American Airpower Heritage Museum from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday & Monday.
